Dear Citizens of Princeton:

We are very proud of our City Employees who made this past year a successful year for our City! This Annual Report reflects the same extraordinary level of accomplishment as we have seen in years past due to the high caliber of our City Employees. As shown below and throughout this report, you will see a tremendous amount of work and progress:

  • Approved the naming of Town Square on Mercer Street as “Dick Copeland Town Square” in recognition of Mr. Copeland’s tireless efforts to transform the square and maintain it as a location for community gatherings and celebrations.
  • Received approval of 10 Community Participation Grant applications from the West Virginia Development Office totaling $36,500 for the following:
    • $2,000 Demolition of Unsafe Structures
    • $1,000 Staging and Promotion of Princeton Autumnfest
    • $4,500 Upgrades and Improvements to the Recreation Center
    • $3,000 Police Department Portable Video System
    • $5,000 Princeton Recreation Center Improvements
    • $5,000 Demolition of Dilapidated and Unsafe Structures (additional grant)
    • $4,000 Update Princeton Railroad Museum Website & Purchase Advertising Materials
    • $5,000 Police Department Computers and Equipment
    • $5,000 Demolition of Dilapidated and Unsafe Structures (additional grant)
    • $2,000 Railroad Museum Advertising and Brochures
  • Completed street paving project involving 14 locations including additional paving on North Walker Street to cover recent utility cutouts.
  • Completed the auction of surplus vehicles and equipment which garnered $16,447 in proceeds.
  • Received report that City officials would be meeting with residents of the recently annexed Clairmont Hills Subdivision to advise of services they will receive as residents of the City.
  • Approved bid of Dills Fire and Safety Equipment, Ravenswood, WV, at $10,116 to provide 4,350 feet of new fire hose for the Fire Department.
  • Approved Lease Agreement with Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc., Blue-Gray Chapter 628, for use of the Fred Gilbert Activity Center, 113 Straley Avenue, as their headquarters.
  • Received report on the completion of the installation of 4 new heaters in the Fire Department bay at a cost of $2,800 which were more energy efficient and would result in considerable savings on the utility bill.
  • Received $250,000 grant from Hugh I. Shott, Jr. Foundation toward correcting flooding at Stafford Drive and Brick Street.
  • Authorized the Fire Department to erect a “Fire Danger Sign” at City Hall to reflect the current level of fire danger as a public service. WV Forestry Department provided the sign and installation at no cost to the City.
  • Welcomed Elke Doom to Princeton and to her new position as Princeton City Manager.
  • Approved Resolution authorizing resubmission of an application for State/HUD Small Cities Block Grant for drainage improvements in and around the Stafford Drive area.
  • Received report that the City of Princeton had been selected as one of six Blueprint Communities in Southern West Virginia and, as a result, would be concentrating efforts to revitalize the downtown section along Mercer Street by applying definite strategies and resources to accomplish its restoration.
  • Approved recommendation from Community Improvement Commission to approve the first 3 murals and respective artists for the Mercer Street Mural Project and authorized the expenditure of $10,000 from budgeted funds for painting of murals.
  • Approved the Business and Occupation Tax Incentive for 15 businesses, which is offered by Princeton City Council to encourage the growth of new business in the City by granting exemptions to qualifying businesses.
  • There were a total of 24 new business start-ups for Fiscal Year 2013 in our City.
